Are you interested in learning Korean culture? If you do, UBD Korean Culture Club is now open for membership registration. XDD

Rules and Regulations:

Open to all current UBS students only.
The club will have about 6 activities for 1 semester. Members are required to attend at least 3 activities to get the certificate. No certificate will be given to those who attend less than 3 activities.
In each activity, members have to sign in upon their arrival and sign out at the end of activity.
You can either register for 1 or 2 semesters.
Fees are non-refundable.

This is to inform you all that the 'Test of Proficiency in Korean' (TOPIK) finally been advertised by the Korean Embassy. This is the first Korean language test held in Brunei. So anyone of you who are interested in joining the TOPIK, you are advised to visit the website of Korean Embassy at brn.mofat.go.kr and select 'English'. From there, you can download the form and hand in to the Embassy between 23rd June and 7th July.

Radish Kimchi making (깍두기)

안녕하세요 !

Here comes the most awaited activity of the semester ! It's the "Kimchi-making" activity !

Kimchi (김치), is a traditional fermented Korean dish, made of vegetables with varied seasonings. Kimchi may also refer to unfermented vegetable dishes. There are hundreds of varieties of kimchi, made with a main vegetable ingredient such as napa cabbage, radish, green onions or cucumber. Kimchi is the most common banchan, or side dish, in Korean cuisine. Kimchi is also a main ingredient for many popular Korean dishes such as kimchi stew (김치찌개; kimchi jjigae), kimchi soup (김칫국; kimchiguk), and kimchi fried rice (김치볶음밥;kimchi bokkeumbap).

This time, we are going to make Radish Kimchi, also known as 깍두기 /kkakdoogi/. Come over and you'll get the chance to taste and even made this dish by yourself. You do not want to miss this !

Some members asked for the recipe to be uploaded to the blog, so here it is.. Hope you guys enjoy cooking korean food at home..ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

100g Kimchi
50g Squid
1 egg
2 cups water
2 cups flour
1 table spoon cooking oil
1 table spoon soy sauce
Big Onion
Spring onion

1) Cut Kimchi into 1 inch cube
2) Slice squid into 2 inch
3) Mix the cut Kimchi, squid, onion and flour
4) Add egg to the mixed Kimchi, squid etc
5) Put water and stir shortly
6) Fry the mixed dough on the oiled pan
7) Serve with soy sauce

Ganggangsullae

What is ganggangsullae?

Ganggangsullae is translated as "Korean Round Dance". It is mostly played on Chuseok, the 15th of August by the Lunar Calendar.

The history of ganggangsullae

It is said to be originated during the Korean-Japanese war (1592-1598). When Admiral Lee Sun-Sin was fighting against Japanese forces, he used Ganggangsullae as a strategic trick that could show he had many soldiers. Under the full moon, making a fire in the center, many women turned around the fire hand in hand. This made the women's shadow on the mountain side . Seen from a distance, it looked like many soldiers were guarding their camp. It worked as a frightening image to the enemy and helped the Admiral Lee to won the battle. From that age, it has been succeeded to commemorate the victory during Chuseok holidays.

How to play?

As the moon rises, women gather at circle. holding each other's hand, then start to turn round and round yelling 'Ganggangsullae' with one voice. Under the moon light, the dancing of women in Hanbok (Korean traditional clothes) makes wonderful scene.

Korean Culture Club’s rules and regulations:

The club will have about six activities for this semester. Members are required to attend at least three activities in order to get certificate. No certificate given to those who attend less than three activities.
In each activity, all the members needs to sign in upon their arrival and sign out at the end of our activity.
You can register for either one semester or two semesters.
Registration fee is accepted until further notice.
Fee is non-refundable.

KCC is organising Korean Food Cooking Competition.

Since this will be our last activity for the semester, KCC will have a small gathering (party) after the activity. Every members are invited and if you want to bring some food to share, you may do so. Just inform KCC committee beforehand to avoid clashes.

People

A few basic facts about Korean people:

Generally known for their darker complexion and high cheek bones. As a race, they can be extremely nice as long as you treat them with respect. However, just keep in mind that some cultural differences are involved so you may consider what they do as rude but they do not mean anything personally by it, it is simply thousands of years of tradition. One example of this may be with the older Koreans.

Everywhere older people are respected, but in Korea they are highly respected.

The people truly are nice and helpful. If you need help and understand little Korean, they will help you. They love when you want to learn the language and will help you with that as well.

If you travel here, you may get looks and feel awkward sometimes, but this is only natural because most people there are Koreans and asian, so any other race may stand out. You really should go sometime and enjoy it! It will definitely be worth the visit.

One common fact that many people never understand properly deals with birthdays. If you speak to an Asian online, you may get confused when discussing ages and what grade in school and everything. This is because birthdays are a little different. Korean people will generally have an age of 1-2 years older than someone elsewhere who was born in the same year. When a Korean is born, they are automatically considered one year old. Many Koreans then consider themselves one year older on January 1st.

Holidays

Korean New Years

-Two Korean New Years. This is because Koreans go by two calenders; one being the same people use in the West, and the other being the lunar calender.

The Korean New Years based on the Western calender. It is a big national holiday in Korea as well, and occurs on January 1st just like we do. During this holiday, many relatives get together to share time together and talk. In Korea, there are some old traditions that some people will still follow. One is to visit the oldest member of the family and bow toward them to show respect and to wish them a long life (this would occur on New Years Eve). The following day on January 1st people will pay respect to ancestors by offering food and wine. This ceremony is called Jaesa. At the beginning of the ceremony, the names of the ancestors are pinned to a board. The oldest family members bows and offers the wine to the ancestors who have passed away. Then, the names are burned. Later in the day, relatives talk about old times and eat food. The traditional food usually eaten on New Years Day is Duk Gook, a type of soup. Kimchi is always present.

The other New Years Day is the Lunar New Years. It is usually around February. People wear the traditional clothes called Hanbok. It also is a day relatives may get together. People will exchange gifts, and the children will definitely be happy because they are usually given money on Lunar New Years. Sometimes the Lunar New Years and the Solar New Years are pretty common and involve similar traditions. The main idea behind it all is to wish everyone a happy new year, good luck in the new year, same as everywhere else in the world, as well as pay respect to those who have passed away.

Independence Day

Similar to our July 4th Independence Day, the Korean Independence Day represents when Koreans declared themselves independent from Japanese rule. It is on March 1st every year, and began in 1919 when the declared themselves independent from Japanese rule.

Chuseok

Christmas

Since Christianity took hold in Korea, Christmas has been a growing holiday there as well. It is a little different than here in the west though. Many young people will use Christmas as a day to go out and party and then will spend New Years with their family, which is just the opposite of many Western families.

Children's Day

I just thought I would list this holiday because it is a holiday that should be introduced everywhere! On Children's Day, May 5th of every year, children are given money for free and taken on outings.

Hangul Day

Hangul Day, also known as Hangul Proclamation Day and Korean Alphabet Day, is on October 9th in South Korea and January 15th in North Korea. It is just a day to celebrate the creation of the language!

Valentines Day, White Day, and Black Day

All of these are related!

Valentines Day is on February 14th, as it is here. On Valentines Day, girls will give chocolates and other gifts to the guys. It is similar to our Valentines Day but is more one-sided.

So, what should be done? White Day was created. On White Day, one month later on March 14th, guys will give more expensive chocolates and gifts to the girls. These chocolates come in white boxes. This way it isn't so one-sided!

But what about the people who feel left out on those days because they have nobody to give chocolates to? That is what Black Day is for! On Black Day, another month later on April 14th, people who have nobody all get together with their friends and eat JaJangMyun Noodles, which are black in color. It is not as popular as Valentines Day and White Day, but it is still celebrated by some people!

As a result, the two trouble-makers are given the option to accept an extended stay behind bars or to join their school's Tae-Kwon-Do club

So, let's us come and watch the movie together!! It will be fun =)

Heheh..I forgot to update (-_-" Y

It has been a very busy week for us the Korean Culture club family what with the Korean Culture Week, KCC 3rd anniversary i.e. KCC singing and dancing competition and also the gala night performance.Only now we got a chance to stop and breathe. Ahahah..

I am very thankful to everyone who had made the events a success. Eventho there's alot of barriers that we had to overcome, miscommunications that occured and so on we still manage to get thru the ups and the downs. We stayed strong til the end. KCC fighting!! I love all of you!!

Ahahah..why does that sound so much like a confession??

KCC Sports Day!!

To tell the truth I won't actually say it's a usual sports day, because it's much more special.

Wanna know why?
It's held at the Muara beach! You get to soak your feet at the sea, feel the breeze to your face, run and play just to release the tension and enjoy the games prepared by us.

Why did I say it's not a normal sports day?
Cause it really isn't. There's a set of games which our Korean youth campers played when they were in Korea and they wanna share 'em with you.

Even us the AJKs are excited for this activity. We can't wait for this Wednesday!! Personally I am really excited and don't be surprised if some of the AJKs join in the game =D

We will be having the korean culture week starting the 4th november to 7th of november this year at the Female hostel hall. On top of that Korean culture club will be celebrating our third year anniversary on the 5th november 2009. With this, Korean culture club is organizing a korean singing and Dancing competition which will be opened to all UBDians (students, lecturers and staffs).

You can enter the competition either individually or as a group. The performance is not necessarily related to korean culture i.e modern singing and dancing is accepted as long as it is related to Korea. The participants is limited to the first-fifteen group who registered first. non-UBDians who wants to join will be considered.

Registration is open until the day of the competition.

Korean Culture Club Registration

We are happy to inform you that Korean Culture Club will be opened for membership registration for this 2009 / 2010 session. All former club members and new members are all welcome to come for the registration on Wednesday, 12th September 2009.

Venue: CLT 1.13
Time: 2.30 p.m.

Registration fee for:

1 semester - $4
2 semesters - $6

Korean Culture Club T-shirt $25

The club's rules and regulations:

1- The club will be having about six to seven activities during one semester. For members to grant the club certificate, each member is required to attend at least four activities. Certificate will not be given to those who have insufficient attendance.

2- In each activity, all the members have to sign in upon their arrival and sign out at the end of the activity.

3- You can register either for one semester (2009) or two semesters (2009 and 2010)

4- Registration fee is accepted until 21st September 2009

5- Fee is non-refundable.

Please be punctual everyone. Your support is highly appreciated. We are looking forward to seeing all of you.

Woot2!!! Summer Camp is back!! on behalf of KCC, i would like to congratulate 9 lucky participants from Brunei this year. They are attending the camp for 2 weeks in S.Korea.Ommo ommo!!! Nae~ it's Korea! Seoul~~~ Wow, guys hope you all will have a nice summer camp, enjoy and have fun in Korea!!

We would like to invite UBD KCC members, Korean Language Class students and those who are interested, to come for the Welcoming Ceremony for Korean Navy Cruise training group. The details are as follow:

Date: 4th June 2009 (Thursday)
Time: 10am
Place: Muara Commercial Port
Dress Code: Malay Dress (Baju kurung/Baju Cara Melayu)

You can bring your friends and family along if they are interested. KCC committees please text me or reach me through Fb/msn (save crdt hehe coz i have something to tell you guys regarding the ceremony)

At the end of June: KCC probably will have an Open Day at OGDC, KB. This will be inform more to you guys later if everything is confirm and we wish to see you guys there too^_^
